Negligent gastric bypass surgery
July/August 2024Julie Bond, 31, underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center. After cutting apart her small intestine, her treating surgeons allegedly reattached it backward. This led to a hernia, necessitating emergency surgery three days later. During this procedure, attending anesthetists allegedly damaged Bond’s lungs, which led to the development of blood clots. After administration of tPA, Bond suffered brain hemorrhaging. She fell into a coma and emerged suffering from quadriplegia and locked-in syndrome.
A subsequent lawsuit against the United States alleged medical negligence.
The parties settled for $9.5 million.
Citation: Bond v. United States, No. 1:2022CV00136 (D. Haw. 2024).
