Negligent discontinuation of ursodiol
February 25, 2024Jacqueline Rodezno went to Greenwich Hospital, complaining of full-body pruritus. She was diagnosed as having intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and prescribed ursodiol. The drug was discontinued when Rodezno’s bile acids returned to normal. The ursodiol was later restarted after Rodezno’s symptoms returned and testing revealed abnormal liver function. Four days later, she delivered a stillborn baby girl.
Rodezno, individually and on behalf of her child’s estate, sued Greenwich Hospital and Northeast Medical Group, alleging negligent discontinuation of and failure to timely restart the ursodiol. The plaintiffs also asserted that the defendants had failed to order repeat bile acids and timely deliver the baby.
The jury awarded $17 million.
