Failure to assess inmate’s worsening condition
March/April 2025Derrick Snyder was an inmate at the Virginia Beach City Jail. NaphCare, Inc., reportedly had a contract with the jail to provide medical care to inmates. When he developed symptoms of an infection and his condition began to worsen, Snyder allegedly asked for medical attention multiple times. NaphCare nurses allegedly did not assess Snyder and dismissed his concerns as frivolous. Snyder became unresponsive and required intubation and an emergency transfer to a hospital. There, he allegedly was diagnosed as having a massive staphylococcal infection. He never regained consciousness.
Snyder’s estate sued NaphCare, Inc., alleging failure to timely assess Snyder’s condition, alert a physician, and obtain vital signs, among other interventions. Suit claimed the defendant’s negligence had allowed Snyder’s infection to progress and remain untreated.
The case settled for an undisclosed amount.
