Failure to Prescribe Anticoagulant
March/April 2019Vanmossevelde v. Transitional Hosps. Corp. of Nev. Inc., No. 16A736492 (Nev. Dist. Ct. Clark Cnty. July 10, 2018).
Craig Vanmossevelde underwent two laminectomies and was diagnosed as having bilateral lower extremity paresis, for which he was prescribed compression stockings. He was then transferred to Kindred Hospital, a transitional care hospital. Almost three weeks into his admission, Vanmossevelde suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism. He is survived by his wife and two minor children.
Vanmossevelde’s estate filed suit against the transitional care hospital, attending internist Amir Aftab, and his practice. Suit alleged failure to administer an anticoag-ulant such as heparin in light of Vanmossevelde’s risk factors, which included recent spinal surgery, immobility, and obesity.
The parties settled for $150,000.
