Failure to Prevent Pressure Sore

March/April 2019

Frazier v. Cooper Univ. Hosp., No. CAML-002338-15 (N.J. Super. Ct. Camden Cnty. July 17, 2018).

William Frazier was admitted to Cooper University Hospital for abdominal surgery. He developed a complication, which required him to stay in the hospital  for additional care and a second surgery. A month into Frazier’s hospitalization, nurses noted that he was developing  a wound on his sacrum. The wound deteriorated,  and Frazier underwent surgical wound debridements.

Nevertheless, the sore progressed to Stage IV. Frazier sued the hospital, alleging liability for its nurses’ failure to prevent the pressure sore. The jury awarded $500,000, which was reduced to $250,000 under state law pertaining to nonprofit corporations.

Plaintiff counsel: Caroline Turner and Christopher Culleton, both of Newtown, Pa.

Plaintiff expert: Monica Koch, wound care, Cincinnati.

Defense experts: Ilene Warner-Maron, nursing, Newtown; and Sharon Brangman, geriatric medicine, Syracuse, N.Y
