Starbucks Patron Slips on Fallen Cardboard Placard

July 2018

Theresa Tedesco, 59, went to a Starbucks coffee shop inside of a Mohegan Sun casino. When she walked over what she thought was a rug, she slipped and fell. The object was in fact a cardboard advertisement that had fallen from an easel in the coffee shop.

As a result of the fall, Tedesco suffered a herniated disk and a rotator cuff injury. She underwent a cervical diskectomy at C6-7 and incurred medical expenses of $60,000. She continues to suffer pain in her arm and shoulder.

Tedesco sued Gordon Retail Concepts, the owner of the Starbucks, alleging premises liability.

The parties settled for $240,000.
