Inadequate Security at Apartment Complex
January 2019Doe, a 44-year-old immigrant from Central America, was on his phone outside the apartment complex where he lived when a stranger tried to rob him. Doe was murdered in the attack. He is survived by his wife and six children.
Suit against the apartment complex alleged inadequate security based on its failure to have sufficient lighting, security cameras, and controlled access. The plaintiff argued that several prior armed robberies had occurred in the surrounding area and that Latino immigrants were often the target of these incidents. Suit did not claim lost income.
The parties settled for $1 million.
