Finding Balance
March 2023Philanthropy
Throughout the pandemic, attorneys have worked harder than ever before to balance their professional and personal lives. They also looked at how and where they were spending their time, taking a step back to assess what made them happy. The WTLC recognized this and in September 2022, it created its Philanthropic Taskforce to help members make a positive societal impact by serving their communities and coming together for important causes.
The task force focuses on all means of philanthropy—lending time, skills, and knowledge in any capacity—whether by volunteering at a shelter or a food pantry, walking for a charity, or promoting awareness about or fundraising for health issues.
It began its work with several breast cancer awareness events in October 2022, recognizing that breast cancer has touched so many members, whether personally or through a family member or friend. The WTLC hosted an interactive session to discuss ways to support people diagnosed with breast cancer with former Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Executive Director Lisa Plunkett and a discussion with an OB-GYN about breast cancer risk factors and the importance of regular screenings.
WTLC members raised over $4,300 for the Komen Foundation for research and support services for those undergoing cancer treatment. Members also participated in the “More than Pink” virtual walk to raise awareness in their individual communities. And the WTLC gathered and shared testimonials from resilient colleagues about their breast cancer diagnoses.
“Philanthropy is fundamental to our society,” said WTLC Chair Kristen Miller. “With the collective strength of our Caucus, the Philanthropic Taskforce can create lasting social change. When an organization receives national support through different avenues in a thought-out manner, a ripple effect occurs. When individuals work together to help others, the collective reminds us of what it means to be human. From there, our communities grow stronger and more vibrant—and we become better humans.”
Education and Professional Development
Created in September 2022, the WTLC’s Education and Professional Development Committee was launched to champion female trial attorneys’ career advancement. It offers programs and guidance to WTLC members as they navigate their careers and chart new paths. The committee allows members to engage in meaningful discussions about successes and challenges in a supportive space. The goal is to raise awareness of issues specific to female attorneys and to tackle those issues through educational programming, mentoring, and speaking opportunities.
The committee launched its programming last December with the first in a series of webinars focused on “Finding Your Happy.” Speakers included WTLC members Lindsey Cheek on how starting a firm put her on the path to professional fulfillment, Laurel Halbany on transitioning between firms, and Katie Hubbard on taking a sabbatical from the law to reflect and forge forward. The committee will continue to hold programs for members to share their stories about how they are working to feel fulfilled, supported, and inspired throughout the different stages of their careers.
All female-identifying AAJ voting members are automatically members of the WTLC. To get involved with WTLC initiatives, join the list server by emailing membership@justice.org or visit www.justice.org/community/caucuses/women-trial-lawyers-caucus.
