Negligent security at apartment complex

November 2023

Doe, 15, lived at the Boca Club Apartments in Orlando, Fla., with his father. One night, Doe was murdered at the complex, which allegedly had a long history of violent and nonviolent crime. He is survived by his parents.

Doe’s estate sued the apartment complex and its management company, alleging negligent security. The plaintiff asserted that the defendants failed to have access control, surveillance cameras, or security guards at the complex.

The defense asserted that it did in fact have security personnel on duty at the complex the night of the incident; however, it failed to produce security logs, time sheets, or other information to substantiate this claim.

The parties settled for $3 million.
