Question of the Month
If you had not become a lawyer, what profession would you have chosen?
October 2025A mechanic. Before I went to law school, I worked on cars and in a factory making wheels and brakes for small planes. I once installed a prototype wheel designed for landing on remote grass airstrips—and then immediately went on the test flight. It worked.
Colin R. Ray, McCarthy Lebit Crystal & Liffman, Cleveland, OH
Bravo producer for “The Real Housewives of New York City.”
Stephen J. Herman, Fishman Haygood, New Orleans, LA
When I was 12, I wanted to be either a teacher or a lawyer. I chose law because I thought I’d have more free time—silly me. Now, I get to do both: I teach jurors about the law and my client’s case, and I love it.
Maryann P. Gallagher, Law Offices of Maryann Gallagher, Los Angeles, CA
I would have been an interior designer because the practice blends rules and creativity, which is similar to litigation.
Tiega-Noel Varlack, Varlack Legal Services, Hayward, CA
A federal agent. I interned at Interpol during my senior year of college and loved it.
Carolyn S. Daley, Power Rogers, Chicago, IL
I would have been a rancher. I love being outside.
Jim Buxton, Buxton Law Group, Oklahoma City, OK
I would have been like Meg Ryan in the rom-com “You’ve Got Mail” and owned a local bookstore.
Rachel Sykes, Pearson Butler, South Jordan, UT
