March 20, 2025While on probation, Sidney Coleman was residing with his family at the Regency Inn and Suites. He left the hotel in a rental car and was pulled over by police officer Sam Sperry, who drew his gun and pointed it at Coleman. He was subjected to a pat down and a vehicle search. The search revealed an empty hypodermic needle, marijuana, and ecstasy pills. Coleman’s brother, who was a passenger in the vehicle, asserted that the items found in the car belonged to him.
Officers later searched Coleman’s hotel room and arrested him for drug possession and carrying a concealed knife. The charges were later dropped.
Coleman sued Sperry, alleging malicious prosecution and unlawful seizure in violation of the Fourth Amendment. The plaintiff claimed that he had been racially profiled and stopped illegally.
The jury awarded $550,000.
