Excessive force

June 8, 2020

Doe, a sixth grader who suffered from mental illness, was to Long Creek Youth Development Center, a juvenile correctional facility. While Doe was in his cell, two guards allegedly came in and banged his head against a metal bed frame, causing him to lose his two front teeth. Doe did not receive a dental consultation until almost a week later.

Doe sued the state of Maine, alleging its guards had used excessive force, in violation of his constitutional rights. The defendant denied any wrongdoing.

The parties settled before trial for $250,000.
